Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Review: Finally Mature?

At the Samsung Unpacked event in Berlin, Samsung presented its new folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Using the same lines as its predecessor, it stands out for its innovative folding design, but with some details that make it special. If you are looking for an innovative smartphone that combines power and performance, this Korean giant flagship is for you.

What else does it have under the hood between a monster processor and doubled storage memory? To find out, continue reading and find all the information on this smartphone and our final verdict in this article.

An Attractive Design With A New Hinge

Samsung has improved its new foldable smartphone, particularly its screen and hinge. Maintaining a sober and elegant design, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has gained in finesse. Measuring only 2 millimeters when closed, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is very compact and fits easily in the pocket and the hands. Its chassis features the same design as its predecessor, with straight, rounded edges.

The smartphone has an Armor aluminum frame and is resistant to any test and accidental drops. Thanks to its new teardrop hinge, which is much less abrupt, the unsightly space between the two parts of the screen has been eliminated. This is because the Fold and Flip of the previous Samsung foldable featured a rounded curvature in the fold, which does not allow them to close fully. As a result, dust, sand, and dirt can seep more easily between the two halves, potentially damaging the screen.

A Responsive And Dynamic Screen For An Immersive Experience

The Korean brand has equipped its Galaxy Z Flip 5 with the largest exterior screen that exists to date. Leaving aside the small 1.9-inch cover screen of the previous models, this one is equipped with the Flex Window, a true wider 3.4-inch external screen capable of displaying images in 748 x 720 pixels and entirely designed for personal expression.

This new display format allows you to perform many operations without unfolding your smartphone. For example, you can check your notifications, view the calendar or even phone calls, communicate on Messages, and entertain yourself on YouTube or Netflix. For better viewing, we recommend deploying your smartphone and taking advantage of its main screen. Moreover, its gorgeous 6.7-inch Dynamic Amoled FHD+ panel with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 1080p resolution is excellent for browsing and watching intense, colorful HDR movies.

A Powerful Processor For Flawless Responsiveness

Samsung has gone heavy with its Galaxy Z Flip 5 to see its technical characteristics. Like the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate, the Honor Magic5 Pro, or the Galaxy S23, it is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 8 Gen 2 with the Adreno 740 graphics chip. Based on Android 13 and running with the latest in-house Samsung One UI 5.1.1 overlay, it offers exceptional power and good ergonomics.

We could also enjoy our favorite games, even the most demanding ones, thanks to the exceptional fluidity of the graphics. Moreover, with 8 GB RAM and an internal storage capacity of 256 GB and 512 GB, this smartphone offers ample storage capacity for all your files.

Correct Autonomy That Will Follow You All-Day

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is powered by a 3,700mAh Li-Po battery compared to the Razr 40 Ultra’s 3,800mAh. This capacity is far compared to high-end non-folding smartphones, which can reach up to 5,000 mAh. However, given its design and performance, it’s already not bad! Moreover, it is compatible with 25 W fast wired charging and 10 W wireless charging. Consequently, if your battery goes flat during the day, be aware that with fast charging, the charge level can reach 50% in just 30 minutes.

Photo Modules At The Top

On the photo sensor side, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has the same characteristics as the Galaxy Z Flip 4. On its back is a dual 12 MP camera, including a wide-angle lens and an ultra wide-angle sensor. You can see a 10 MP front sensor on its internal screen by unfolding it.

Even though it doesn’t have a telephoto lens, the main sensor lets you take great pictures in good lighting conditions. No big news, apparently, except at the level of its selfie sensor. With the FlexCam function, stunning images can be taken from any angle. Indeed, it allows you to play with the angle of inclination of your smartphone enough to take original and stylish shots with ease.

When testing the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, there was a real improvement in image post-processing and light capture. Colors are warmer and more vivid, so photos are more visually appealing. At the video level, we are rather satisfied with its performance. Indeed, thanks to the Nightography mode, we could take superb videos of night scenes in 4K at 60 fps.

Our Verdict

Without hesitation, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is generally better than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 4. It also scores points on the one hand for its new hinge, allowing it to be completely flat when folded. On the other hand, for its wider external screen, which gives you unprecedented daily use.

It is a well-built, compact, and comfortable smartphone that provides excellent performance for a foldable device. Moreover, it is ideal for taking selfies! It is a good choice if you are looking for a powerful and capable foldable smartphone. However, its price is slightly higher than others in its range.
